The concept of formulating an organization to take care of Buddhist monasteries locally popular by the name of baha and bahi in Lalitpur was introduced in 1975. Subsequently, an organization was formed naming it 'Bouddha Samaj Sudhar Samiti' (Committee for Reformation of Buddhist Community) on 17 November 1975 (1 Mansir, 2032). It was initiated by a very popular baha called kwa-baha (Hiranyavarna Mahavihar) located a little north of Lalitpur Durbar Square. Later, this organization took a form of association in 13 November 1990 (27 Kartik 2047) with its office at Pulchok in the premises of Aksheshwora Mahavihar and the name given was Boddha Vihara Sangha (Association of Buddhist Monasteries of Lalitpur). The main objective of this association/organization has remained the preservation and promotion of baha and bahi of Lalitpur along with promotion of Newar Buddhism.

Currently, 16 baha and 13 bahi of Lalitpur are affiliated with this association and the list is shown in Table no 1 (a) and (b). However, there are several other smaller baha and bahi. There are also other baha and bahi which are categorized as branches of these major baha and bahi which are categorized as branches of these major baha and bahi. In this way, there are more than 260 in total. Each affiliated baha or bahi has one representation in this Association. An executive committee has been formed which comprised of 10 members viz. one Chairman, two Vice Chairman, one Secretary, one Treasurer and five executive members. The executive committee is elected for tenure of three years.
